A good hobby.
Playing an acoustic guitar is one of those hobbies that you don't pick up right away. It's not like a video game that you can set to easy mode when you're having difficulties on level seven. Or like the all to famous and favorite past time of the American population "watching people do things on tv" I feel that playing Acoustic guitar is one of those things that you have to force yourself to do. It's like seeing a person skate board down the street and saying to yourself "I want that too." "They make it look so easy". So you get one, try it, and fall on your bottom. Now, some people might just put that skate board up on the wall in a cool spot while they heal from the wounds of failure. And they might never pick it up again... Or they will...Other people would stay outside, bloody and bruised trying to figure the dang thing out! I have seen all kinds of successful and un successful attempts at playing guitar.
A lot of time and emotion goes into playing any instrument, and if your not ready for that investment, it can become a stale burden. It may not be easy, but it is well worth it. I find that playing guitar is a great way to releive stress or anxiety! And if you just took 20 mins out of your facebook or tv needs, you would benefit greatly from learning. Playing Acoustic guitar like most hobbies, can be a very social, competitive, relaxing, or rewarding experience.
I have this friend who wanted me to teach him how to play guitar. I guess after seeing or hearing other people play acoustic, he wanted in on all the fun. I remember I gave him one of my old acoustics as a gift and a way to start playing. he was so excited! I remember seeing him go through the same phases that I went through when I started playing. He would become frustrated when he couldn't play what I was showing him. And he would put the guitar aside and change the subject. It was very important at this point that I put the guitar down as well. I had learned from past lessons that people can easily become "put out" by you if you "show off" So we would talk. I would try to keep the topic of our conversations directed towards guitar and music. Eventually the night would come to an end and my friend would go home. It was out of my hands at that point. But as it turned out, when he went home he would play for hours! And he would learn songs, chords, scales and not show or tell me that he knew them. He would stilll come over for lessons, and learn all he could from me. He started getting real good, better than me. He got in some bands, played out at bars and to this day I dont ever see him without a guitar in his hands on his back or in his car. I noticed a change in his behavior too. He became more confident. He was happy more and seemed relaxed all the time.
I am not saying playing acoustic guitar is the best hobby in the world. But if you dont have a hobby, maybe you should give it a try?
Nice job Ben. I too am a guitar player. I started on acoustic about ten years ago so i can relate to your concept of practice and hard work. I now play in a few bands a sometimes look back and miss just sitting around pluckin away at new chord progressions. Even if you dont like sevendust, check out their acoustic album. All in open C# tuning and some melodic. Alot of cool sounds that helped me expand my own style.
ReplyDeletewill do. I enjoy open tuning. I do worry about it stressing the neck though... I like seven dust as well. I only know two songs by them though.
DeleteI can relate to this. If you want to learn a song or something on guitar, you really do have to force yourself to practice, and it is so rewarding when it finally clicks. Great job! I can't find any major errors. Maybe look at changing the last sentence in the first paragraph, the "successful and un successful" part needs some reworking, maybe see if "successful and failed" will work. Other than that way to go!
ReplyDeleteAwesome job. I don't play a instrument but I do have to agree with you. If you are going to play something you got to play it with emotions and feelings. It's not easy to pick up and just play. I like the sentence It's not like a video game that you can set to easy mode when you're having difficulties on level seven.
ReplyDeleteI love how you compare playing guitar to skateboarding..it makes the story a little commical
ReplyDeleteIt must feel awesome to know that you helped teach your friend how to play, and that it has brought his self confidence up because of that. You are right it does take a lot of work to learn an instrument, I was in band in high school but never stuck with one instrument long enough to get good. I guess I wasn't patient enough. (It's not like a video game that you can set to easy mode when you're having difficulties on level seven.) I thought this sentence was a great example in this illustrative essay. I would capitalize the H in (he was so excited) I would also capitalize the title. These are the only spelling errors I found-(un successful)(releive)(stilll). Great job!
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you described your connection with your friend and you part in teaching him to play. Really good essay, and only a few typo's.
ReplyDeleteI have been playing guitar for about 40 yrs and yes it is not just pick it up and play. Often times people think they sound great but don't really take the time to practice and it takes a lot to master it. Yet some have the gift and pick it up and make sound beautiful and look too easy. That really sucks for those of us who actually try at it.
ReplyDeleteI have tried to learn to play a guitar and I am one who gracefully failed. Your thesis is clear. I enjoyed reading your essay. I noticed a few errors that you may have overlooked. Otherwise, good job.
ReplyDeleteI tried learning to play guitar about twenty years ago and I was not very successful. It was way to complicated for me at the time, I have thought about trying again. This was very easy to follow, I think you did a great job.
ReplyDeleteI started with the drums in middle school, I think that any instrument is a good hobby. It is frustrating however when you try to help a friend out and they excel and don't say anything. Looks good, keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteI liked that you broadened the experience to other people by comparing a failed attempt at playing a guitar to falling off a skateboard and used the story about teaching your friend how to play as an affirmation that it can be done with practice. Besides a few grammatical issues (began a couple sentences with conjunctions and missing a comma) and one spelling error "unsuccessful", I didn't find anything wrong with this piece. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteI tried playing the drums once when i was a kid but it was too annoying for anyone around. I think that anytime someone wants to learn any new instrument it should be in a confined area. Thanks Ben
ReplyDeleteI agree.
